A student work placement

As a resource for all communities, we were delighted to receive a request to provide a work experience placement for Jace, a first-year student at Newcastle College studying Forensic and behavioural sciences. In recounting her experience Jace wrote ‘During the last few months, I have had the amazing opportunity to join Jackie and Claire as a student placement to observe and learn about how they view and practice within the funeral industry.

During my time I have had many great opportunities that Jackie and Claire have been able to secure which have included: Traveling to partner/independent directors, the local cancer support centre: Maggie’s, talking to Andrew Hetherington (senior coroner) at County Hall, and some other amazing opportunities that will help me progress my academic career.

Not only this, but I have also had the pleasure to observe Jackie and Claire at work and I can say that they are the gentlest, most caring women that I have met and can put anyone instantly at ease. This can be seen in how they interact with those who are bereaved and with their loved ones, ensuring them the respect and dignity they deserve.

Forget Me Not is a place that I would feel comfortable getting help from as Jackie and Claire are not only very hands-on and supportive, but they have also created a space that feels safe to discuss the wants and needs of loved ones as well as receive support and actively partake in the caregiving of a loved one, giving them the perfect send off for each person.

I appreciate the time that I have spent with Jackie, Claire and everyone who has aided me throughout my placement and cannot thank them enough for their input and information that will advance my academic career.’

FMNF also greatly benefited from Jace in that she questioned and challenged us, brought fresh ideas, new perspectives and her positive influence has continued beyond her placement. We recommend all small business consider offering student placements. Yes, it’s hard work, the gains however, are invaluable.

On the 15th of August Jace was accepted into Northumbria University to study criminology and forensic science in September. It was brilliant news to start her day and ours too.
