Our Open Day – learning sharing and unexpected humour

Thank you to everyone who helped make our open day a resounding success. We were overwhelmed at the level of interest and support from communities and those we work alongside.

We were delighted that people not only wanted to look around and ask questions, but also to understand how we care for people, and ensure choice and transparency is central to all that we do. Without exception people said they were pleased they had attended and were delightfully surprised at how bright, light, warm, welcoming and calm the place was.

In talking about their wishes regarding death with Gloria from The End Matters, visitors said they felt relieved, comforted and empowered.

Neil, a highly qualified grief counsellor, trainer, researcher and podcaster with over 30 years experience from The Campbell Grief Institute, offered a listening ear and guidance on understanding the complex aspects of grief, as well as advice about advance planning for late life matters. Matthew, a Chartered Financial Planner, spoke to people about the necessity of sound advice and planning to safeguard their financial estates.

Linda from Northumberland Woodland Burial and Crematorium chatted about the region’s first private, family owned, purpose-built crematorium which opened in 2022. She described the stunning stone built, modern chapel, flooded with natural light along with the cuddling couches that help create a comforting, calm space, set within the beautiful natural burial and memorial grounds.

Celebrants Avril, Neil and Sharon listened to people and talked about their approaches to the role. While Jane from Journey with Janey acknowledged that navigating through grief and loss can be overwhelming but does not need to be travelled alone. Also, Natalie from Age UK Northumberland’s Bereavement Services outlined the free services she and the Team offer including 1-1 counselling, self-help information, emotional support groups, mindfulness sessions, practical advice and signposting.

A number of visitors arranged follow up discussions including C and his wife. A few days after their private meeting we received these two exceptional cartoons drawn by C. They now hang proudly on our walls.
